Healing comes from within. Yoga and meditation help people to avoid the abandonment, loneliness, isolation and sense of separation. By practicing Yoga, we know and love ourselves.
We also find self-acceptance, a union of opposites within us, and awareness and sensitivity to our own needs. When we are self-aware, self-accepting, self-responsible and self-loving, we are ready to enter into relationship with other people. People can focus their awareness inward rather than how a pose or the people around them look. Surveys have found that those who practiced yoga were more aware of their bodies than people who did not practice yoga. They were also more satisfied with and less critical of their bodies. For these reasons, yoga has become an integral part in the treatment of eating disorders and programs that promote positive body image and self-esteem.
Mindfulness refers to focusing your attention on what you are experiencing in the present moment without judging yourself. Practicing yoga has been shown to increase mindfulness not just in class, but in other areas of a person\s life. By practicing Yoga, we learn to enjoy and respect our body for where it is at the moment and not where we wish it could, or should be. And success is impeded when we want our body to respond as it did when we were younger. With a successful yoga practice, we do not need to be anything, such as flexible or strong or even healthy. We just need to pay attention to "the way things are" and just do it. In so doing, when we learn how to move through life without forcing or making unreasonable goals, and as we move forward paying attention as we go; we will experience the pure joy of the moment.
Therefore, by treating our yoga exercises intelligently and respectfully, we move toward balance of body, mind and spirit.
The body and mind are so intricately interrelated; as goes our body, goes our mind. Over time, as our body becomes increasingly balanced, and as we increase our flexibility and strength; our awareness and control increases, both physically and emotionally. Likewise, success and joy in relationships comes not through force or manipulation, but from the sheer delight of paying attention to our partner or friend or child or parent and by enjoying their very perfection.
When appropriately practiced, Yoga can have a profound effect upon men’s body, emotions, and diet. But did you know that when properly practiced, yoga also offers us help and insight into our relationships including our responsibility and role in them? Successful relationships are built by respecting others and by paying proper attention to the people around us. However, lack of respect, or abuse, regardless of how subtle, inattention, or even hyper-attentiveness can damage a relationship. Such damage can cause emotional hurt and sometimes physical distress, both to us and others.
Alberta Men’s Network’s efforts of organizing Yoga exercises can definitely help in developing healthy relationships in men and women, a powerful tool for men’s well-being.
